 It is a Japanese animation series. The series was created by Hiroyuki Imaishi, in conjunction with Aniplex and Konami.

 Synopsis

 Humanity is forced to live below the surface, spending many centuries like this, becoming forgotten and turning life on the surface into a legend. This is how small colonies are created by digging in different places and trying to escape from the terrible earthquakes. In one of those colonies lives Simon, one of the best excavators, who finds a strange key in the shape of a lathe in one of the holes. Although everyone makes fun of Simon for being very weird and with low self-esteem, the only one who always supports him is Kamina who invites him to go to the surface. Of course the Head of the colony forbids this action which is supposed to be taboo for people and locks up Kamina. On a nightly dig, Simon finds this time a face-shaped mecha and runs to Kamina to show it to him, but suddenly a huge face-shaped robot falls from the surface and a mysterious girl attacks him with her rifle. Simon, Kamina and the girl (Yoko) try to escape and Simon leads them to his discovery, there he tells Kamina to drive it to defeat the robot however, Kamina replies that that fuse belongs to him and therefore he should drive it ... between twists and turns the 3 enter the head and before an impulse from Kamina together with the help of Yoko, Simon somehow manages to defeat the huge face; Not only that, but they are expelled to the surface... There Simon and Kamina discover a wonderful world for them but they are also surprised that on the surface a group of Ganmen (Mechas in the shape of a face) that attack the Humans coming to the surface.

 Anime

 The anime series consists of 27 episodes, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and produced by the Gainax studio, together with Aniplex and Konami. Its broadcast on TV Tokyo began on April 1, 2007 and ended on September 30, 2007.

    This anime is (if not my favorite) one of my favorites. Every episode gives you chills, makes you wonder what is going to happen in the next episode and stops you from getting up of the couch or bed or any place you're watching it. 100% woth it, I really recommend it.
